Letter to Emilie

Teplitz, July 17, 1812.

In 1812, young Emilie M., an aspiring musician wrote to Beethoven seeking guidance. Beethoven, despite his worsening deafness and personal struggles, responded warmly. He advised her not to just practice music, but to "get into its inner being." He believed that true artistry goes beyond technique—it requires soul and understanding. At this time, he was composing masterpieces like the Seventh Symphony. He was also suffering from heartbreak, possibly linked to his "Immortal Beloved". Despite his hardships, he saw music as a force that elevates the human spirit. He finishes his letter with the words "Look upon me as your friend, and as the friend of your family."
